All Foreign Language department courses are aligned with
the California State Standards for Foreign Language and
meet the UC/CSU "E" requirements for language other than
English, except as noted.
FRENCH:
French I 9, 10, 11, 12
10 Credits
This class is an introduction to the French language that
gives the student a basic command of the skills in reading,
writing, and speaking French. An introduction to French
culture is included.
French II 10, 11, 12
10 Credits
This class reinforces basic skills and introduces formal
grammar and elements of French culture. Completes two-year
sequence. Basic text comprehension, presented in both
oral and written form, is taught in this course.
French III 11, 12
10 Credits
This course continues the development begun in French
II. The emphasis is on formal grammar and continues the
study of the French culture. Reading is intensified as
students are exposed to French literature. Speaking and
writing take an important place; the students must make
an oral presentation in French ever month in front of
the class and submit a written report to the teacher.
French IV 12
10 Credits
This course continues the development begun in French
III. The emphasis is on the student's ability to understand
spoken French in various contexts, developing a vocabulary
sufficiently ample for reading different writings without
dependence on a dictionary, and the ability to express
themselves with reasonable fluency in both written and
spoken French.
AP French Language 12
10 Credits
Prerequisite: A grade of 'A' for both semesters of
French III.
This course continues the development begun in French
III and prepares students for the AP examination in French.
It emphasizes the use of language for active communication
and helps students develop the ability to understand spoken
French in various contexts, developing a vocabulary sufficiently
ample for reading different writings without dependence
on a dictionary, and the ability to express themselves
with reasonable fluency in both written and spoken French.
Students who take this class are required to take the
AP exam.
SPANISH:
Spanish I 9, 10, 11, 12
10 Credits
This course is designed to develop basic skills in reading,
writing, speaking, listening to and understanding Spanish.
The curriculum emphasizes grammar and cultural awareness.
A computer-assisted program is included for tutorial practice.
Spanish I Accelerated 9, 10, 11

Prerequisite: Passing score of 70 or higher on the
placement test.
This language course is for native Spanish speakers. This
is a course designed to improve the student's listening,
reading, speaking, and writing skills and moves at a quicker
pace than Spanish I. Computer-assisted program software
is included for tutorial activities related to every lesson.
A Spanish reading text and workbook are used in addition
to the textbook for this class.
Spanish II 10, 11, 12
10 Credits
This course continues the development begun in Spanish
I, emphasizes formal grammar and introduces the study
of Hispanic culture. A computer-assisted program is included
for tutorial practice.
Spanish II Accelerated 9, 10, 11,
12
10 Credits
Prerequisite: Passing grade in Spanish IA or 90 or
higher on the placement test.
This course is the second year of language for native
Spanish speakers. The course strives to build the student
s ability to understand, speak, read, and write in Spanish.
Hispanic culture continues to be a very important element
of the class. A computer program is used to expand students'
vocabulary and grammar.
Spanish III 10, 11, 12
10 Credits
Prerequisite: A grade of B of higher for the entire
year in Spanish II.
This course continues the development of Spanish skills.
The emphasis is on formal grammar and writing and the
study of the Hispanic culture in addition to the emphasis
given to literature. Drills are offered to develop students
preparation for the Advanced Placement examination. A
computer program is included as part of this course.
AP Spanish Language 11, 12
10 Credits
Prerequisite: A grade of A in both semesters of Spanish
II or Spanish III.
This course gives students higher levels of learning in
speaking, reading, writing, and listening. The class is
designed for students preparing for the Advanced Placement
Examination in Spanish. Students who take this class are
required to take the AP exam.
AP Spanish Literature 11, 12
10 Credits
Prerequisite: A grade of A in either Spanish III or AP
Spanish Language.
This course is for fluent speakers of Spanish. The emphasis
is on formal grammar and writing It also continues the
understanding of the Hispanic culture with an additional
emphasis given to Spanish literature and writing. Drills
are offered to develop students' preparation for the Advanced
Placement examination in Spanish Literature. Students
who take this class are required to take the AP exam.
