St. Matthias High School competes as a member of the California
Interscholastic Federation, Southern Section. As a Catholic
school, it is also a member of the Catholic Athletic Association
(CAA).
We also compete in the Camino Del Rey League. SMHS is
scheduled to participate in the following sports during
the academic school year: Volleyball, Cross-Country, Basketball,
Softball, Soccer, Swimming and Track.
Physical Education:
P.E. /Health 9
10 Credits
This course is a requirement for all freshmen and transfer
students who have not fulfilled the requirement prior
to enrollment in SMHS. The purpose of this course is to
heighten students level of physical fitness through a
variety of exercise activities. Activities aim to increase
students' cardiovascular capacity flexibility, and strength.
By the end of this course, students will be able to design
a personal fitness program so that they can maintain their
physical health. The class acquaints students with various
physical activities including body mechanics, physical
fitness, soccer, aerobics, softball, tennis, basketball,
and weight training Students will acquire basic skills
and knowledge of the rules pertaining to the various sports
This course will also cover personal health; consumer
and community health; injury prevention and safety alcohol
tobacco, and other drugs; nutrition; environmental health;
family living; individual growth and development' and
communicable diseases. Hands-on experiences such as the
"Baby Think It Over" program will be included.
Athletics 9, 10, 11, 12
2.5 Credits
Students may earn 2.5 credits per athletic season for
full, active participation on a varsity junior varsity
or freshman sports team from initial try-outs and practice
through the entire regular season and playoffs(if applicable).
This course is graded credit/no-credit, and credit is
contingent upon recommendation of the team coach and Athletic
Director. The name of the sport and level distinction
(V or JV) will be noted on the transcript. Athletics may
not be substituted for P.E.
Cheer 9, 10, 11, 12
5 Credits
Students may earn credit for full, active participation
in two semesters of varsity or junior varsity cheerleading.
Attendance is required at regular practices and games.
A schedule is published at the beginning of each season.
This course will be graded on a credit/no-credit basis.
Cheer may not be substituted for P.E.
