All Science department courses are aligned with the California State Standards for Science and meet the UC/CSU "D" requirements for science, except as noted.

PHYSICAL SCIENCES:

Biology  10                                                                                  10 Credits

This college preparatory lab course studies in depth the structure and function of living things - cells, plants, animals, and humans - and their relationship to each other. Genetics, heredity, evolution, and current discoveries in biology as well as connections to other science disciplines are also included. Science process skills such as classifying, observing, hypothesizing, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions are taught. The scientific method with emphasis on lab reporting is taught and practiced at length. There is a $20 lab fee for this course payable to the Business Office by the Fall.

Honors Biology  10                                                                       10 Credits

Prerequisite: Applicants must:
1) submit a statement of why the student wants to be in honors biology which includes a description of the student's prior experiences in science courses or science topics of interest and why,
2) show evidence (First semester or third quarter report card) of current enrollment in Algebra I with a grade of 'C-' or higher, and
3) interview with the department chair.
This course challenges students to go beyond the information being learned in Biology by requiring them to accomplish more rigorous laboratory, in-class, and out-of-class projects and activities which demonstrate a more advanced understanding of biological concepts, and which demonstrate the student's ability to employ the scientific method within and beyond the laboratory. There is a $20 lab fee for this course payable to the Business Office by Fall.

Chemistry   11                                                                               10 Credits

Prerequisite: A grade of 'C-' or higher in Biology and a passing grade or concurrent enrollment in Algebra II. This college preparatory lab course studies the elements - the basic substances that compose all matter. The structure of the atom and atomic theory, compounds, chemical reactions, solutions, chemical equilibrium and kinetics are among the topics covered. There is a $20 lab fee for this course payable to the Business Office by Fall.

Chemistry in the Community   11                                                    10 Credits

Prerequisite: Passing grade in Biology.
This course explores chemistry as it relates to household, local, and global environments. Concepts include atomic structures, states of matter, chemical reactions, and energy. This course is designed for college-bound students who plan to pursue careers in fields other than science. $20 lab fee for this course is payable to the Business Office by Fall.

Human Anatomy and Physiology  12                                               10 Credits

Prerequisite: A grade of 'C-' or higher in Biology and a grade of 'C-' or higher in Chemistry or Chemistry in the Community.
This college preparatory lab course covers, in detail, the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the major systems of the human body. $20 lab fee for this course is payable to the Business Office by Fall.

Physics   12                                                                                10 Credits

Prerequisite: A grade of 'C-' or higher in Chemistry, a grade of 'C-' or higher in Algebra II, and concurrent enrollment in Pre-Calculus.
This college preparatory lab course is a survey of elementary physics with an emphasis on mechanics, including static and dynamics, transitional and rotational motion, work and energy, elasticity and simple harmonic motion, and gravitational theory. The mathematical solution of elementary physics problems at the pre-calculus level will be stressed. $20 lab fee for this course is payable to the Business Office by Fall. A scientific calculator is required, the specifications for which will be explained in the course syllabus.
